Mars Rocks

Captain Lucy Pennington had seen some weird things during her time with the Interplanetary Peace Patrol, but nothing quite like the neon-green Martian in the battered spacesuit dancing on the surface of the Red Planet. She squinted through her visor, trying to figure out why this creature was wearing a helmet filled with… well, what looked suspiciously like a giant brain. And why it had a bright sign that read: Mars Rocks.

The Martian, noticing her confusion, gestured wildly for her to come closer. With a resigned sigh, Lucy trudged over the rocky terrain, kicking up crimson dust.

“Greetings, Earthling!” the Martian said, voice crackling through the translator. “Name’s Grok, lead singer and planet ambassador of the Martian Rockers!” He flashed a toothy grin—well, more like a menacing skull grin, but Lucy tried not to judge.

“Lead singer?” Lucy asked, eyeing the sign.

Grok tapped his oversized cranium. “Our music is out of this world—literally. We beam it straight from my brain to the amplifiers. It’s how we rehearse! No wires, no speakers, just pure telepathic jam sessions.”

Lucy was at a loss for words. She’d been sent to investigate suspicious signals emanating from Mars, rumored to be part of a plot against Earth. Instead, she found a one-Martian rock band practicing for an interplanetary concert.

“Wait, so you’re not planning an invasion?” she asked, half relieved, half incredulous.

“Invade Earth?” Grok scoffed. “Why would I do that? We just want to rock with you guys! We’ve been broadcasting sweet tunes for weeks. That’s probably what your sensors picked up.”

Behind him, a ragtag collection of instruments glowed under the pale Martian sun. A guitar with cosmic strings, a drum set built from meteor fragments, and a swirling theremin-like device that beeped in time with Grok’s blinking red eyes.

“So… you’re inviting humans to a concert on Mars?” Lucy asked, still skeptical.

“Absolutely!” Grok exclaimed. “But I’ve got a slight problem.” He lowered his voice conspiratorially. “Turns out, I forgot to book any backup musicians. I was hoping to recruit some Earthlings for the big show. My entire band left me for Saturn’s rings—they said the acoustics there are better.”

Lucy rubbed her helmet in disbelief. “So, let me get this straight: you want me to join your band?”

Grok clapped his bony hands, sending dust floating around them. “Yes! We’ll unite our planets with the power of music!”

She considered radioing her commander, but something about the Martian’s enthusiasm was disarming. “Alright, Grok,” she said with a shrug. “I can’t play an instrument, but I can hum a tune.”

“That’s the spirit!” Grok beamed. “We’ll teach you the Martian Warble—our signature vocal style. Just imagine a goose singing opera while gargling cosmic dust.”

Lucy stifled a laugh. “Sounds… interesting.”

Moments later, the rocky plains echoed with the strangest jam session in the solar system. A green Martian telepathically strumming cosmic chords, a bewildered Earthling humming off-key, and the faint hope that, maybe, the galaxy could learn to get along—one ridiculously catchy song at a time.
